Vegan fashion brands: The Veganuary is also about fashion.

"Veganism is a philosophy and way of life that excludes (to the extent possible) all forms of exploitation and cruelty to animals for food, clothing or other purposes, and encourages the development and use of animal-free alternatives for the benefit of animals, people and the environment," explains the Vegan Society. The global market for vegan women's fashion was valued at $396.9 billion in 2019 (41.3% of which is shoes alone). This shows that vegan clothing, bags, shoes and accessories are becoming more and more popular.

What is vegan clothing?

Vegan clothing is free from any animal-based materials such as silk, wool, feathers, down, leather, exotic leather, hide or fur. Also, buttons are not made of horn or mother-of-pearl, and rainwear is not impregnated with beeswax.

Since we're in the middle of Veganuary, we've rounded up the most beautiful vegan fashion brands for you that prove just how stylish vegan fashion can be.

The rule of thumb is: keep wearing what you already own – and instead choose to add carefully selected vegan pieces that have been ethically produced in the future.

20 Vegan Fashion Brands...

1. Fashion brands with vegan wool

If you've spent any time on TikTok and Instagram over the past year, chances are you've come across House of Sunny's designs more than once — albeit unknowingly. From psychedelic patterns to graphic prints, ditching scratchy wool has never been easier with the fully vegan label from London. Hope Macaulay is similarly colorful. But the brand is best known for its colossal knitwear, handknit to order in Ireland. We love that they also offer a vegan alternative to wool, made from 100% biodegradable nylon. If you like something more classic, we recommend Cordera. The clean and vegan-friendly knitwear is sustainably manufactured with Japanese knitting machines in Galicia.

2. Fashion brand with vegan leather clothing

A leather jacket is a classic that, as is well known, belongs in every wardrobe. A responsible version for the environment and animal welfare is available from the Georgian brand Materiel, which completely dispenses with real leather, fur and feathers and instead uses animal-free recycling materials. Self-confessed fans are fashion enthusiasts, like Alexa Chung, who wears matching faux leather pants with the jacket.

3. Fashion brands with vegan leather accessories

The vegan (fairly produced and super-sustainable) handbag brand Mashu has a particularly exciting range of plant-based leathers such as Piñatex made from pineapple leaves, hemp, Desserto made from cactus leather and Bio Veg/Corn, a combination of recycled polyester made from plastic bottles and corn. For sustainability reasons, the Korean accessories label Ki Lee has not used real leather since 2019 and instead relies on innovative and renewable raw materials such as cork and futuristic design.

4. Fashion brands with vegan shoes

The 'Game of Thrones" star Maisie Williams is passionate about social issues. She recently teamed up with Parisian accessories house Coperni to launch apple leather bags and shoes with its signature linear sensibility. An insider tip is the young shoe label Feners from Barcelona. It proves with its vegan collection that sustainability, manufacturing, materials and ethics are possible at an affordable price.

5. Fashion brands with vegan suede

Alfredo Pīferi, previously Head Designer at Jimmy Choo, founded his own vegan luxury shoe label Pīferi after a pivotal experience, which he describes succinctly with the words "sexy and sustainable". The bag label Mr Label from Manhattan also values cruelty-free practices, which is why no animal materials are used at all. Inspired by 90s nostalgia, these are pieces of jewelry (from 65 euros) that should adorn your arms this summer. The hit: They are available in many cheerful colors and with personalized embroidery.

6. Fashion brands with vegan shearling

From faux shearling jackets to luxe, cruelty-free bags and shoes, hyped Budapest-based luxury label Nanushka has developed a supple faux leather that you have to touch. It is therefore not surprising that the iconic pieces have become an integral part of the front rows of fashion weeks. The designs of the Californian brand Simon Miller are less restrained. They are particularly fun to look at because of the surprising textures, bright colors and artistic prints. Our current favorites are the iconic vegan shearling bubble clogs.

7. Fashion brands with vegan down

"FLWRDWN" is a plant-based alternative to goose and duck down, peacefully made from dried wildflowers. Welcome to the world of Pangaia, a rising star in the sustainability sky who accompanies us into the future with his credo "less fashion, more material science". OpéraSPORT also has mindful clothing: the all-over puffer look is made from recycled polyester. This is particularly good for textiles that are rarely washed to prevent microplastics from getting into the water. The tiny parts and plastic fibers are toxic to marine life and account for up to 21 million tons of plastic pollution in the ocean.

8. Fashion brand with vegan fur

After a mutant variant of the Covid-19 virus was discovered in a Danish mink fur farm last year, and scientists feared it would jeopardize the effectiveness of future vaccines, 15 million of the farm animals were killed. Since that incident, designers (like Valentino and Oscar de la Renta) and retailers (like Net-a-porter and Bloomingdales) have been banning real fur from their shelves. Yet in China, Finland, Poland and 21 other countries, 100 million animals are killed for their fur every year. But why? Where there are incredibly luxurious fake furs like those by Marei 1998. At the 100% vegan label you will find not only its iconic faux furs but also vegan leather jackets and pants. And the best thing about it: not a single animal had to suffer for these cuddly looks.

9. Fashion brand with vegan crocodile leather

If you're looking for a statement piece, try a leather coat or bag with a crocodile texture. The pieces of the THEMOIRè label embody traditional Italian craftsmanship combined with modern standards. This is done down to the last detail: even the thread that holds the vegan evening bag "Hera" together was recycled from PET water bottles. And because that's not enough, a tree is even planted with the purchase.

10. Fashion brands with vegan snakeskin

Similar to a classic leather jacket, accessories with a python pattern never go out of style because they give even the simplest outfit that certain something with a touch of vintage. The New York shoe label AERA has the vegan high-end version of the trend, which ranges from ankle boots to ballerinas. We spotted a classy slingback at O2 Monde. Like Aera, the brand is also completely vegan. They replace animal skins and synthetic plastics with supple plant-based hides.

11. Fashion brands with vegan silk

Tencel consists of processed wood fibers, but feels surprisingly soft. So soft, in fact, that it's called vegan silk. At EVARAE we have found a wonderful Tencel skirt that we will wear from morning to night during the summer. The playful and ironic creations of Collina Strada always manage to amaze. And that's not just because of the designs, but also because of the materials like Rose Sylk. This is an organic cellulose fiber made from rose petals and stems. With this we are guaranteed access to paradise.
