The Best Natural & Non-Toxic Perfumes You Will Love

Smells are so very powerful to us, they can invoke memories that will transport us to the past or remind us of a special person in our life. The smells of an April shower, burning leaves in the fall, special scents waffling from the kitchen during the holidays, and my mom’s heart-to-heart Eau de perfume bear hugs.

The fragrances we choose to wear are extremely personal to each of us, often rotating based on seasons, work, activities, and events we're attending. Day after day have you thought about the perfumes you were wearing? Most of us choose by smells and scents. Little do we know  that the perfume we spray on our skin is filled with toxins that should be avoided. They contain harmful and toxic ingredients and most perfume companies keep their ingredients a secret…..I wonder why? Maybe the carcinogenic chemicals, phthalates, and petroleum that can cause many startling health risks including, migraines, skin allergies, cancer, endocrine disruption, asthma, and birth defects.

As we become more select and particular about the natural, sustainable products we use or wear, perfume often gets overlooked. So we did some research and put together a list of non-toxic, sustainable perfumes with naturally occurring ingredients that smell amazing!

Always keep in mind we can’t simply or straightforwardly know the exact ingredients in most perfume formulations. There is no FDA or governmental authority leading the charge of regulating or certifying perfumes as toxic or not. This means we have to be diligent and do the job as detectives ourselves. So don’t be drawn in by beautiful packaging, exotic aromas, and luxury brands, keep these few things in mind.

  1. Natural, nontoxic perfumes are not impossible to find and your body and health will thank you in the long run.
  2. Don’t buy any perfume that does not fully disclose all its ingredients.
  3. When ingredients are listed, and you’re not sure what they mean, look them up on EWG’s Skin Deep database.
  4. Look for a made safe seal.
  5. Look for products that only use natural, organic ingredients. They will probably be clearly stated on the packaging.
  6. Store fragrances in dark, cool places and avoid humidity.
  7. The term natural refers to “from nature”, or naturally occurring. “Non-toxic” means the item in question is not toxic or does not contain ingredients that could be toxic to humans. These two terms are NOT mutually exclusive.
